More than four decades have passed since a whitewater rafting trip through the Grand Canyon captured the imagination of OARS president and founder, George Wendt. His journey inspired him to establish the first exclusively oar-powered rafting outfitter permitted to run the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon back in 1969. Based in Angels Camp, the company is now the largest and most geographically diverse river outfitter in the West with destinations and unparalleled experiences on over 35 rivers and coastlines of the world. OARS is routinely recognized as a “best in class” outfitter based on education, sustainability, quality of service, spirit of adventure and references.

Hi Sandee - Apologies for the long delay for this answer. I didn't see your question until today. The closest river to Arnold that we run is the North Fork Stanislaus, which only runs in the early spring. We raft from Dorrington to Calaveras Big Trees State Park on a 5-mile Class IV section. The next two closest are the South Fork American, which runs all season, and the Merced, outside of Yosemite, which usually runs into mid-July depending on snow pack and runoff. Each of these rivers are just over 90 miles from Arnold. You can always call our office at 800.346.6277 if you have any questions about any of our trips.

Hi Grammie, The minimum age for our South Fork American trip is 7. At high water (generally in May and June), the age limits can be even higher. Because our trips take place in wild environments, there are inherent risk factors that can’t be entirely avoided without compromising the unique character of the activity. Obviously, it’s not our intention to reduce your enthusiasm for outdoor adventure activities, but we believe it is important for everyone to know in advance that real adventure involves real risk, much of which simply cannot be controlled by O.A.R.S. or O.A.R.S. employees. By joining one of our trips, you are representing that you understand, and are accepting of, the risks described in the acknowledgment/release document that all participants are required to sign. You will not be tethered to the raft at any time. I’d encourage you to give us a call so we can talk with you about when might be the best time to travel with your family.
