If you are just taking a bus up there and walking to the refugee you will be fine. If you’re actually making a summit bid, you need to train. Do you have any mountaineering Experience? Have you ever walked for more than six hours in 12 point crampons uphill with 1/2 the oxygen at sea level? If you want training a routine and more preparation info let me know. If you seriously want this summit; training, acclimating, and conditioning are definitely required.
For those of you who have already been, roughly how cold does it get? girlfriend and I are in Ecuador and want to go Cotopaxi (not summit though, just around 5000m day trip) but don't have winter jackets with us, we have long sleeves, hoodies, light jackets, if we layer up and buy gloves/hats do you think this will suffice?? thanks for your help!

Be careful. Unless you are acclimated, a short trip to a much higher altitude can leave you with altitude sickness that may leave you with severe headaches.

I don't think that there are guides with 4x4 waiting. We had organized a drive from Quito who took us up to the volcano. On arrival there the vehicle could not go right up so we stopped and we attempted to climb the rest but it was raining and snowing. It was difficult in the cold damp low oxygen mountain. If you are very fit yes you can hike up. there are guides who will take you up but I don't think they have vehicles.
