US regulators are ramping up efforts to dismantle Google’s monopoly power, proposing a breakup of the tech giant that could see its Chrome web browser sold off and its Android software stripped of preferential treatment for its search engine.

Based on Bloombergs latest report, Justice Departments antitrust officials have decided to request a judge to force the sale of Chrome, and will also seek to have Android separated from the search.

Doing the same swap with an Android device is more akin to starting three-quarters fresh. After one or two Android phones, you learn to bake in an extra hour of rapid-fire logging in to all your apps. Password managers, or just using a Google account as your authentication, are a godsend.

Android’s new “Restore Credentials” may remove much of the tedium of logging back into apps when switching to a new device.
