Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Rangers to investigate two controversial lottery jackpots amid growing scrutiny over the role of online ticketing firms in the state.

The Texas Lottery on Monday banned online lottery ticket sales by third-party courier services after Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and lawmakers had questioned the practice. The policy is effective immediately and “aligns with legislative efforts to address serious concerns raised by players and state leadership regarding the integrity,

The policy shift was announced before state senators, skeptical of the move, grilled officials with the department and courier services in a hearing on SB 28.

The announcement came as lottery officials have faced scrutiny over a controversial $83.5 million lottery ticket that was purchased through courier service.

After saying they couldn't do anything to stop courier services from operating in the state, the Texas Lottery now says that online gaming services aren't allowed under state law and will move forward with new rules to prohibit them.

Major changes are coming to the way millions of Texans play the lottery in our state. On Monday, the Texas Lottery Commission announced it will ban lottery courier services, which allow people to order tickets online or through an app.
