WA 64, Washington State University's newest apple. A public contest with more than 15,000 submissions crowned the crop with a name.

The apple breeding program at Washington State University has cultivated a new addition to their fruity lineup.

The apple, a cross between Honeycrisp and Cripps Pink previously known as WA 64, will be called Sunflare. The name was picked from more than 15,000 responses to a public naming contest. A news release from WSU said Sunflare was a memorable name that highlighted the apple’s appearance — a pink blush on a yellow background.
