A Murshidabad court on Friday sentenced to death one person and awarded life imprisonment to another in the rape and murder of a minor girl and necrophilia in West Bengal's Farakka in October.

The incident sparked violent protests in the area, about 50 km from Kolkata, coinciding with outrage over the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

A nine-year-old girl was abducted, raped and later killed by a man, identified as Mustakin Sardar in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district in October this year.

In a swift verdict, a Jangipur court sentenced Dinabandhu Halder to death for the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl in Farakka. His accomplice, Subhajit Halder, received life imprisonment. The court also awarded Rs 10 lakh compensation to the victim's family.
