A West Michigan mother is working to bring awareness to the impact of rare diseases after her 4-year-old son was diagnosed.

Maverick Penley has a condition called DYRK1A syndrome, a genetic condition he will live with his entire life. He was at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital on Wednesday for an appointment.

RX Kids, the first citywide parent and infant cash program in the United States, is launching in Kalamazoo on Sunday. The program provides funds to expectant families both during and post-pregnancy.
