More widespread use of mammograms, along with the implementation of targeted hormone therapies more than 40 years ago, has significantly contributed to the decline in death rates. But even though Black women are slightly more likely than white women to receive regular mammograms, targeted hormone therapies are often less effective for Black women.

Cancer deaths among Black men and women in the United States have declined during the past decade in the United States, a new American Cancer Society report says.

Black men experienced the most significant relative decline in cancer deaths at nearly every age, compared to Black women and white people. This included a 65% to 67% decrease in deaths among those between 40 and 59 years of age.

Cancer mortality has decreased among Black Americans, but they still have elevated mortality rates compared with White Americans, according to a study published online Feb. 20 in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
