Cash flow is the difference between survival and failure in the trucking industry. Even a profitable business on paper can collapse if it doesn't have the cash to cover fuel, maintenance, and payroll.
In many cases, the federal government’s Paycheck Protection Program served as a last-resort resource for providing the cash flow necessary to keep these small, local businesses afloat.
However, once a person crosses that threshold, based on what I have seen, their ability to save for retirement seems to have more to do with how they manage their cash flow than anything else.
