Haitian police officers Monday demanded better protection and treatment a day after gunmen killed a Kenyan police officer who was part of a U.N.-backed mission tasked with fighting gangs in the troubled Caribbean country.

The officer’s death appeared to be the first among the Kenyan forces that were sent to Haiti last year as part of an international effort to subdue gang violence.

Sunday's casualty was the first the mission has suffered since the U.N.-backed anti-gang force arrived in the country
