Periampullary cancers are defined as those cancers that arise within 2 cm of the ampulla of Vater in the duodenum. They account for only 5% of gastrointestinal tract cancers. Periampullary cancers can be divided into four categories: ampullary, biliary, pancreatic, and duodenal. Pancreatic is the most common, followed by ampullary.

In the majority of instances, periampullary tumors include adenocarcinomas of the pancreatic head, duodenum, ampulla of Vater, and lower bile duct. Diagnosis is based mainly on a history of jaundice or is made by endoscopic duodenoscopy with retrograde pancreatography or by cholangiography or both.
