In English, the term refugee derives from the root word refuge, from Old French refuge, meaning "hiding place". It refers to "shelter or protection from danger or distress", from Latin fugere, "to flee", and refugium, "a taking [of] refuge, place to flee back to".

Nations to Neighbors Montana (N2N) is a non-profit organization and network of Billings residents dedicated to supporting refugees who are resettled in our community. N2N was born in 2021 as a community-based private sponsorship group to welcome Afghans who were evacuated by the US government after the fall of Kabul.

Montana Food Bank Network (MFBN) distributes food to 360 partners that include community food banks, pantries, schools, senior centers, and shelters to end hunger in Montana. Montana Housing can assist with rental housing assistance, multifamily rental development, buying a home, mortgage servicing, and reverse annuity mortgages.

A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so.
