Jul 26, 2012 · Brass brazing is used to join together metals that have a higher melting temperature than that of the brass itself. Not saying that it cannot be done but, you would need to know the exact composition of each alloy (and thus the melting point) that you are working with. Your best chance of success is to start with a big enough piece of brass.

Yellow Brass 905 - 932 1660 - 1710 From this table I lifted, it seems that you are right on the razor edge, depending on which material you choose. I don't solder my guards. I get a couple of thousands fit and then seal the guard with epoxy.

Sep 10, 2008 · The brazing rod contains zinc and the zinc will boil off and raise the melting point of the brass, making it harder to braze the part. Instead heat the parts in the forge and when they are hot enough, pull them out and touch the brazing rod to the joint. The brass should melt and get sucked into the joint by capillary action.

Feb 13, 2020 · Both are a 56% silver brazing rod, but the Safety-Silv is much smaller diameter than the SSF-6 I see on Amazon. It will not break. In fact, it will outlast the brass. It has a slight brassy color, and matches well when fresh, but when the brass eventually tarnishes the braze line will stand out like a sore thumb.

Sep 24, 2022 · For the brass melting, yeah, do it outside with good airflow and don't breathe the yellow/white smoke. You'd need a respirator rated for metal fume, and those are not cheap. Ordinary P100s, N95s, and even organic vapor cartridges do not remove metal fumes.

Oct 13, 2019 · I want to make my own rivets from brass wire. It would simple to make flat-head rivets, but I want to make dome head rivets using 16 gauge wire. Anyone have any experience with this? Is it as simple as putting the wire into block with 1/16" sticking out, and hitting it with a dome-shaped die?

Aug 26, 2023 · For cold-forming the brass, I usually forge it around a steel mandrel and make the parts in halves, then braze the seams. The late Alex Daniels made a neat-o press to do this. He'd grind out a steel mandrel the exact size of the sheath tip and throat, make a paper pattern that would fit perfectly halfway up the sides of the mandrels.

Apr 11, 2024 · Some more of my Things Made This Month...a stacked leather/brass/micarta single-edge dagger a la scian-dubh and sheath, French-style sabatier in 80crv2 and patnered meat cleaver in 1084 with cocobolo, brass corby's and dovetailed bolsters with (respectively) cherry and walnut scabbards, and an ebony and copper hunter from 80crv2 with the best hamon I've accomplished yet.
