Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli (October 14, 1824 – June 29, 1886) was a French painter of the generation preceding the Impressionists. Monticelli was born in Marseille in humble circumstances.

Adolphe Monticelli was a French painter whose finest works, derived from scenes by Antoine Watteau, are dreamlike images of courtly revels. Using thick daubs of paint, applied to achieve a swirling effect, he created a poetic, visionary expression with radiant lights and deep shadows.

Monticelli was born in Marseilles. He spent the years 1846-8 in Paris where he frequented the studio of Delaroche. On a second visit to Paris in 1856, he made the acquaintance of Diaz and was influenced by Diaz's use of colour and choice of subject. Van Gogh greatly admired Monticelli's work.

Born in Marseille on 14 October 1824, Adolphe Monticelli was raised in a peasant family in Ganagobie, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, and studied at the school of drawing in Marseille. From 1846 to 1848 he attended Paul Delaroche’s studio in Paris and was influenced by the painting of Eugène Delacroix.

French painter, active in his native Marseilles and in Paris. He was a pupil of Paul Delaroche, but he learned more from his studies of Old Masters in the Louvre; he was also influenced by his friends Delacroix and Diaz de la Peña.

Monticelli frequently adapted Diaz's practice of introducing nudes or elegantly costumed figures into his landscapes. Adolphe Monticelli developed a highly individual Romantic style of painting, in which richly colored, dappled, textured and glazed surfaces produce a scintillating effect.
