Since my viewstate is formed after a postback and comes as a result of an operation in an update panel, I cannot provide a url.

Can you modify an encrypted ViewState if you have the encryption key? If enableViewStateMac is off, then it is theoretically possible. You would have to decode and decrypt the ViewState, change something, encrypt and encode the data and then reset the ViewState hidden variable.
