Instead, I'd butt the top and bottom halves together and use a 3' or 4' piece of 2x4 against the side of the splice, screwed along its length top and bottom.

Applying a small amount wood glue to the butt joints is a good idea. The whole length will expand as a unit and never pull apart again unless you somehow nail it to the floor.
