"happen to be" and "happen to have" - expressions of probability?
2015年9月7日 · No, not at all. In both cases, something "happened". It is a fact, not just a possibility. To say "happened to be" or "happened to have" implies that it could have happened by chance (not likely for a degree in computer science—that would necessarily be intentional). It does not include an iota of chance that the thing might NOT have happened.

"to have met" refers to the state of "having met", which is a present state, hence "happen to have met". I don't think there is any use of "happen" where you would need to refer to a past state, and so "happened to have met" just won't be used.

Update: OK, so the 2 paths being: my daughter had a cut by her eye, the doctor chose stitches instead of suture glue, and the ensuing pain, torn stitches, and inability to remove them all could have been avoided if she'd just used the glue in the first place.

Why this happened is the reason for it; how this happened is asking about what caused it, so you could ask for that specific information. You could add Thank you as a courtesy. It would be useful [or helpful or some other adjective] to understand the cause of this as well as the reason for it.

2014年5月21日 · Replacing "two times" with "twice" is natural and recommended; replacing "three times" with "thrice" is weird and archaic. There's no logical reason why that should be so — that's just how English is used these days. "It only happened the last twice" sounds wrong because last is an adjective, and it needs to modify a noun (times).
