The calends or kalends (Latin: kalendae) is the first day of every month in the Roman calendar. The English word "calendar" is derived from this word. The Romans called the first day of every month the calends, signifying the start of a new lunar phase.

The kalends were the day for payment of debts and the account books (kalendaria) kept for them gave English its word calendar. The public Roman calendars were the fasti , which designated the religious and legal character of each month's days.
