You can use a wall wart for power, thus avoiding high voltage wiring. Here's one of mine. This is a bass preamp with input gain, bass, semi-parametric mid, treble, and volume, using 9 transistors.

If you can build your own from a "kit" type schematic then you can build your own just following the schematic of any preamp you happen to like.
