Our national parks contain diverse coastal environments: high-energy rocky shorelines of Acadia National Park in Maine, quiet lagoons within War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Guam, and the white sandy beaches of Gulf Islands National Seashore in Mississippi and Florida.
Coastal Geology in National Parks Of the 388 units in the National Park System, 97 have coastal features. These coastal park units, which include National Seashores, Lakeshores, Recreational Areas, Memorials, and Monuments, contain more than 7,300 miles of shoreline and a wide diversity of geological, biological, and cultural resources.
In 2000 a Coastal Geology team was created within the NPS Geologic Resources Division to coordinate the needs of coastal park managers and distribute information to preserve our dynamic coastal environments. This brochure presents coastal geology issues and highlights work done by the NPS Coastal Geology team.
