In 1746, parcels and private correspondence were first delivered by courier, and starting in 1781 money, too, could be delivered to one's door. The earliest known Russian postmark dates from July 1765; it is a single line reading "ST.PETERSBURG" (in Latin letters), but the first official recommendation to use postmarks did not come until 1781.

From the middle of July, 1858 numeral postmarks began to be issued to post offices throughout Russia. The dotted postmarks were used for cancelling the stamps. A pre-adhesive postmark was also applied to a letter to indicate the date it was posted. Post offices in the same locality were given the same number.
