Chord V7 – The Dominant 7th - My Music Theory
Chord V7 is also known as the “dominant 7 th ” chord. It is built from the dominant triad, plus another third added on top: the 5 th, 7 th, 2 nd and 4 th notes of the scale. In C major, the dominant 7 th chord contains the notes G, B, D and F. In minor keys, the dominant 7 th is built from the harmonic minor scale.
Minor Key Chord Progressions i - iv - v and V7
Chord progressions in minor keys often follow the i - iv - v pattern, which includes the tonic, subdominant, and dominant chords. The use of the dominant seventh chord (V7) adds tension and resolution to the progression, enhancing the harmonic movement.
The V7 chord in the key of C is G7. In the following examples, try switching between V and V7 and listening for the difference. Thousands of folk songs, country songs, and the blues use only the I, IV, and V chords.
