2012年6月2日 · In the sources I have read they are simply described as "halloos" (not descriptive of the sound I don't think) with only a few descriptions of more specific noises. According to McWhiney, Rebel battle cries could be traced back directly to Scotland, etc. I don't really guy many of McWhiney's arguments, just reiterating his specific point

"Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Fort Pillow" were the vengeful battle-cries of the Texans in the Texan War of Independence, and the the black Union troops in the Civil War, respectively.

Battle cries have existed since antiquity and come in various forms, but invoking ones country as a battlecry strikes me as somewhat unusual before the nationalisms of the 19th century. I'm wondering if the same phenomenon occured anywhere else at the same time or earlier.
